Travel During Red Restrictions over Summer
If you’re worried about travel restrictions during the pandemic, here’s what you need to know. You can travel around New Zealand even at Red, except for possible temporary restrictions. Even if you live in Auckland, you can still travel in and out of the city for any reason, including leisure, as of mid December. The only thing you need to remember is that you must be fully vaccinated and have your My Vaccine Pass with you. Alternatively, you can carry evidence of a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before crossing a boundary.

Northland
According to current COVID-19 regulations in New Zealand, Northland is likely to be the trickiest place to travel in and out of, but again, you should be fine as long as you have your My Vaccine Pass. Checkpoints will be on State Highway 1 at Uretiti and State Highway 12 near Maugaturoto.
If you’re keen for awe-inspiring sea views, you’ll enjoy your time journeying through Northland. It’s a huge region at the very top of the North Island where you can enjoy camping in one of the many gorgeous coastal towns. You can also camp and relax on nearby beaches, including Sandy Bay beach.

The Catlins

Located at the very north of the South Island, this area is home to a wide array of wildlife, including whales, seals, and rare birds. This is an exciting trip if you’re an animal lover!
Wanaka
A short drive from Queenstown, Wanaka is a must-see place if you’re on the South Island. Enjoy hiking up to marvellous viewpoints such as Roy’s Peak. You can also drive up to see scenic views of the Blue Pools and experience pristine waters or wander its beautiful native forests.
Russell
