Spring is a time of renewal and change, and for the residents at Fairview it’s a great time to enjoy independent senior living to the fullest! While the impact of COVID-19 still affects us all, there are still many wonderful ways that we can make the most of springtime right now. Today, we explore four excellent spring activities for seniors to do to stay social and active and make the most of the season.
1. Take a Springtime Stroll and Enjoy Nature
Take a springtime stroll around your neighbourhood! Walking is an effective, low-impact way of exercising and a way of increasing our endurance. Not only can we get our daily vitamin D and feel refreshed doing this activity, but walking comes with a bunch of other health benefits as well, such as increasing our cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness, balance, and bone health.
2. Create an Indoor Garden
Start an indoor garden and bring the freshness of nature into your home. Potted plants around the home can be a lovely way of adding colour and freshness into our living areas, and spring is a great time to start a new project such as an indoor flower garden (e.g., with orchids, peace lilies, and cyclamen), or herb garden (e.g., with coriander, chives, mint, and thyme). You can also simply bring in some lovely greenery to make your home feel bright and fresh.
3. Spend Quality Time with Loved Ones (Physically or Online)
Spending quality time with others is important for our general health, happiness, and mental wellbeing, and this is especially true for those of us in our senior years.
Make sure to give yourself some time to spend with your loved ones this spring, either physically or through a video call. Spending time together and seeing each other’s faces can make a world of difference in how we feel. If you would like to video call a loved one but are not sure how to do so, just give them a call and let them know you would love to see them through a video call. They’re sure to be glad you called them and more than happy to set up a video call with you.
4. Do some Spring Cleaning and Decorating
If your home is feeling a bit stuffy and cluttered, or if the changing season is making you feel like it’s time for a home refresh, spring cleaning might be the activity for you. Springtime offers us a great excuse to freshen up our living space and get organised again, and a clean home can also let us declutter our thoughts at the same time. It’s incredible how much lighter you can feel after removing the clutter and freeing up your space for new possibilities.
Top Safety Tips and Guidelines to Follow
Depending on the level of lockdown you may be in, it is important to consider all COVID-19 safety measures. Here are a few general tips to consider when going outdoors:
1.Bring a protective mask with you to wear, especially in public areas.
2.When venturing outside, try to avoid the busy hours of the day, as this will help you to limit interactions with people outside of your bubble.
3.Wash/sanitise your hands when you return from your excursion.
